Later, Google introduced Core Web Vitals, a set of performance metrics measuring loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. As a result, technical SEO evolved into a specialised discipline. Website audits expanded beyond keyword analysis to include page speed optimisation, structured data implementation, server response times, and mobile performance evaluation. Edge’s evolution illustrates a broader principle within the history of browsing the web. Market leadership does not guarantee permanence. Distribution advantages and legacy dominance can erode in the absence of technical adaptation and user centred innovation. Launched in 2016 by Brendan Eich, co founder of Mozilla and creator of JavaScript, Brave entered the browser market with a clearly differentiated value proposition centred on privacy. Rather than competing primarily on speed or interface design, Brave positioned itself as a response to the growing concerns surrounding data tracking, behavioural profiling, and surveillance based advertising.

By default, Brave blocks third party advertisements and tracking scripts, preventing many of the background data exchanges that underpin much of the digital advertising ecosystem. Instead of allowing extensive third party tracking, Brave introduced an alternative system in which users can choose to view privacy respecting advertisements and receive Basic Attention Tokens as compensation. Brave’s emergence reflects broader industry trends. Safari implemented Intelligent Tracking Prevention, limiting cross site tracking capabilities. Firefox strengthened its Enhanced Tracking Protection features, blocking many third party cookies and fingerprinting techniques. Even Google, whose business model has long relied on advertising revenue, announced plans to phase out third party cookies within Chrome, proposing alternative privacy oriented frameworks for targeted advertising.

Large Language Models pull information from multiple sources, synthesise it, and present a cohesive response. Instead of asking users to click through several websites, the browser or search engine often delivers a consolidated answer immediately. And when someone uses voice search, what happens? There is no list to scroll through. There is typically one answer. One interpretation. One source distilled into a spoken response.

So what does that mean for visibility?

It means the rules are expanding. Traditional SEO has focused on ranking well within search engine results pages. But now we are seeing the rise of Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, and Answer Engine Optimisation, AEO. The focus shifts slightly. It is no longer only about being number one in a list of links. It is about being credible enough, structured clearly enough, and authoritative enough to be referenced inside AI generated answers.
