What is the difference between WordPress files and the MySQL database?

WordPress files contain the software code, themes and plugins that help the website function. Uploaded images and documents are also generally stored within the file structure. The MySQL database stores most written content, user records, website settings and other structured information. These elements have different but connected roles, and both are required for a WordPress website to operate properly.
